In BM Foundry we use the more traditional patterns process wich is sand casting, since this is a very refractory material abundant in nature and that, when mixed with clay, acquires cohesion without losing moldability and permeability which allows gas to evacuate the mold while the molten metal is poured in. Sand casting involves pouring a molten metal, typically of iron alloys, steel, bronze, brass and others in a sand mold, let it solidify and then break the mold to remove the casting.

For casting with metals like iron or lead, which are significantly heavier than the sand mold, the patterns is often covered with a heavy plate to prevent a problem known as "floating mold", which occurs when the metal pressure pushes sand above the mold cavity, causing the process to not be carried out satisfactorily.

The accuracy of the casting is limited by the type of sand and the patterns process used. The casting made with thick green sand provides a rough texture on the surface of the workpiece. However, the dry sand patterns produces parts with smoother surfaces.

For better finish of the surface’s parts, these may be polished or coated with a residue of oxides, silicates and other compounds which are subsequently eliminated through different processes, including peening.
